Is there a way to convert grayscale KITTI dataset images to color or visa versa?

I'm working with the KITTI stereo dataset having 4 cameras. Two of them are grayscale and the other two are color. I need all four of them to be the same. Directly converting the color ones to grayscale does not give images of the same brightness. What's the correct way to convert them?

Dear Anupam

Fortunately, the greyscale data is one of the three dimensions (Lightness Chroma and Hue) of the overall colour data captured by the cameras. It follows that you can make an accurate comparison of the grayscale Lightness instances at constant Chroma and Hue and likewise isolate the Hue and Chroma data.
