i am not aware of such a model but i believe cognitive variables are related to the personality of an individual. since personality is unique, cognition will be subject to situational/ environmental influences in a manner similar to behavior and reaction to situational change.

Mirko, thanks for the suggestion. It would seem that these variables will be changed chronologically and hence noting such changes may give further insight on how a user's intent changes over time. I though am still chasing to know if there are some published standard user model specification which account for such variables covering the aspects that you rightly pointed out.  

While you reflect on this Jay there is a very generic conceptual framework Hodges' model (which I am studying) which may help you weigh up the various factors within your question and responses here. It's very simplistic in appearance but also situated and person-centered (developed in healthcare and education).

Survey models in library and information studies often take into account the attitudes of library users, (situated and person-centered) and I think there is a correlation between these attitudes and developmental and learning theory.

My institute conducted a usability test for all of the tasks of windows 8 with over 200  users last year, and found the users' cognition was guided by their motivation, expectation and goal of each task. The users followed the main flow of each tasks and under the context of each action stage they initiate their cognition to find out the affordance of the action. Thus, the cognitive variables are task depended.

What is the purpose for a standard Conceptual/Concrete Personalization User Model? To suggest a Recommender System algorithm?

Meng, thanks for the suggestion. In your studies, did you extend any standard user model and then did the data collection? Was motivation and expectation weighed implicitly or, were explicitly asked in the survey?

And yes, one of the intended application of this model is Recommender Systems :)

Jay, I think the measure has to stay in the weighted balance as there cannot be exact measures when it comes to human preferences.  I think some of the work on crowd sourcing could also help you and there are a lot of examples of using this for prediction analysis. 

You could take a look at the AHAM model which is in the area of personalization and adaptive hypermedia. Then you can take it futher for extension as i did during my PhD study.

I would say motivation and expectation are part of an individual's attitude, and attitudes can be measured.  Here's and interesting MEA article linking them to tourism.

@Jay. From our experience, it is very hard to establish a standard user model, but it is possible to establish a user model for a specific Recommend System. A Master Thesis "Applied Research on Personalized Recommendation in B2C E-Commerce" from my institute was finished in 2010. It is a project "social commerce" from IBM CDL, which combined SNS with E-commerce Recommend System. It is a little sorry that only the abstract is in english available (in attachment).

Our User Model was based on the task-chains which users needed to operate. During the test, the users needed to think-aloud when they did their tasks. Before the test, we needed to collect all the interface elements(controls, fonts, texts, icons) , and marked as observation points during test. After each task, the user asked about their expectation and thinking of the errors they made during the just-finished task.

@Jay: To the best of my knowledge several  models have been proposed in litterature to define users' profiles (Saracevic 1997, Fuhr 2000, Göker & Myrhaug 2002, Briconsouf & Newman 2007, Mansourian 2008, Tamime et al., 2010). Cognitive data is defined using different components. I recommend you to see these models and  then select the one that match with your needs, you can even use it as a seed and then improved according to your application and available data.
