Hi, I wanted to know if there is some free software, website or chart where you input a digital colour, either upload a small jpeg or enter the RBG code of the colour (#B86048) and it gives you back a label or name (text) for that colour. I am studying mycology and I have to describe the colours of fungi very carefully. It is not just brown or dark brown, but it is usually more descriptive and imaginary descriptions like copper-brown, curry, cinnamon, mouse-gray... Not being an English native, I find these colour descriptions a bit difficult to come up with. Colour charts are expensive and not used anymore in descriptions, while online paint charts are not consistent. My wish is to take a colour from my image, input in the software, and gives a shortlist of possible colour names.

What you need is a colour space model. A good one is Kelly's "universal colour language"

@David Oulton - I have acquired something similar, flashcards with hundreds of colours, but there are two main problems. 1. practically nobody has them and so writing in a text colour of the organ is brown code X123 means no reference to the general reader who cant cross reference. Noordeloos used them in his work. Then, 2. these old printed publications lose their original colour and a fixed / standardized representation is lost . I asked the authors for article share. In the second link, the home page was quite unuseful, but then I clicked the link named colours and sorted by hue, and then things got a bit useful:

For example that grey with bluish tones is Pewter blue or Slate-blue, but there are weird names like air superiority blue or Airforce blue - nobody heard about them. !
