What is the relation between Maslow's hierarchy of needs and intrinsic/extrinsic motivation? I mean can psychological, safety, security, friendship, belonging and self-esteem be synonym to extrinsic motivation and self-actualization is synonym to intrinsic motivation?

I think that there is a relation between the two theories. As you know, the most elemenatry level of Maslow's hiearchy of needs is one's basic and material needs and the most advanced level is sell-actualization. What lies at the heart of Deci's self-determination theory is the distinction between intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. In the former, for example, students are intrinsically motivated when they study because of their intellectual curiosity and are extrinsically motivated, for example, when they study to receive their teachers' or parents' approval. So, intrinsically motivated people are more oriented to self-actualization than their extrinsically-oriented counterparts.
