I am planning a sintering experiment for an Fe-Si system. I have a high temperature furnace with graphite heating elements. I am concerned if there's a risk of carbon pick up due to prolonged heating at high temperature. Does anyone ever experienced/came across info about such microcarburizing possibility due to graphite heating elements.?
You will really have the possibility of carbon transfer through your protective atmosphere. In H2 the formation of methan allows the C-transport. Other gases have the problem of oxygen impurities. Then the transpoprt goes via CO. If your furnace allows good atmospheres, the best way in my opinion would be sintering in very clean argon. In such sintering we normally evacuate (vacuum) and fill the furnace several times before heating up. If evacuation is not possible, long intensive flushing of the furnace is needed. With Fe-Si sintering I personally had good experience with vacuum sintering. If the experiments are oriented on soft magnetic material, make shure, that the Fe-powder is reduced in hydrogen atmosphere to have low oxygen content.
