Childhood maltreatment is usually measured with the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ). However, as far as I know, the CTQ is not in the public domain. Moreover, I may need to make some modifications (e.g. language adaptations, using only some of the original subscales, etc.), which could complicate things with the publisher. Are you aware of a free/open (as well as psychometrically sound) alternative that I could use as a retrospective measure of child abuse in adults?

The other commonly used instrument is Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs).
Bruce J Ellis , that is a good suggestion. The American Psychologist's January issue was devoted to articles which (mostly) used that instrument. It doesn't capture emotional & behavioural responses like the CTQ does, but it will allow one to quantify the common traumas a person has been exposed to.
Look at Table 2 of the attached article. It shows the variety of different ways that have been used to retrospectively assess adverse developmental experiences and environmental exposures in childhood.
