There have been many selections and reports of predatory journals in the list. Also as the list on UGC website includes all journals from many many specialities it’s difficult to see whether the journal you are thinking of submitting to is a part of the approved ones or not. A speciality wise list would be so helpful.
Also so how much does it matter that the articles are published in a UGC approved journal? Many good journals e.g. the lancet public health have not been approved....

If you are working in medical college, you should consider about MCI criteria for promotion. However, it's always better to choose journal indexed in Medline/Pubmed with a higher impact factor. As, UGC and MCI both may change their criteria anytime. UGC just cleared the questionable journal from their list. MCI already conducted meetings for this matter and would publish the new guidelines soon.
Well I have not gone through the list of journals approved by MCI as it is not relevant for me but in principle, in the current era where most of the good research is done by interdisciplinary team, it does not make sense to make list of journals by speciality.
