There is an open source version of SPSS, named PSPP. The main problem is the fact that it is so distant of the lincensed one, in terms of the statistical methods implemented. At least, it is interesting to know, follow the project link:

Use R it's free and it has some reasonable GUI interfaces now so it's easier to use; PSPP is somewhat limited in what it can do but worth a try.

I agree use R software in biostatistics and also epidemiological data better to use Epi-info software it is better to use for data view not strong for analysis it is free. SAS also good but it is advanced and also asked program knowledge

There are endless tutorials on the web, just google R tutorials; also lots of manuals on the R-cran website.

I have been looking for a stats package that I can use at home also. SPSS is very expensive and I am not likely to get into methods to the extent that I want to learn programing as required for R. I see that STATISTICA is rising in the business world as an alternative to SAS - I tried a demo version and I think it is quite useful for basic stats -it has limited programing and a very easy to use. It is much cheaper than SPSS. It might be a good alternative for those wishing to learn epidemiology so they can better manage their research, without wanting to become an epidemiologist per se.... STATA is another alternative that is cheaper than SPSS.

Susan - thank you for adding a comment. This question is over a year old - I forgot I posted it! I want to follow up now on what I have found since I posted it.

First, I needed SPSS, not because I like it, but because I tutor and universities teach it. I learned that if you need a teaching copy of SPSS because you are tutoring someone, all you have to do is 1) get the student's transcript (or similar document in PDF) saying that the student has current credits in an appropriate class (e.g. biostats, thesis credits); 2) go to www.onthehub.com (approved online dealer from IBM of SPSS for teaching), and 3) using the PDF as documentation, purchase SPSS for around $100. Bonus: they let you download it - no discs!

Second, I agree with those who say R is superior. I use R myself, and I teach it whenever I can. However, SAS has become epidemic (LOL!) in public health, and SPSS in the social sciences. This is because university licenses for students and faculty are cheap and loaded with bells and whistles, and copies for small businesses like me are basic and cost thousands of dollars I'm unwilling to spend. Caveat: SAS really is what you need with huge (millions) datasets. I still have not found an easy way around that one.

Finally, I now have a teaching appointment - teach at Laboure College, now in Milton, MA - but unfortunately, they do not have statistical software licenses for the above programs, so I still needed to figure out how to get SPSS for my tutoring.

Thanks to all who weighed in! Any further comments about 1) how to get teaching copies of non-open-source statistical software, and 2) reviews of statistical software or R packages are especially welcome. If you see something promising, please tell us how to get a demo so we can try it.
