The rats can be anesthetized during delivery of blast. Lee Goldstein here at the BUSM uses anesthesia in his model. Use a short acting anesthetic such as isoflurane as longer acting anesthetics may attenuate the induction of apoptosis et cetera. I believe they induce trauma via air pressure.

That is a very good and important question.

In general the advice given by Marcia should help: anesthesia and analgesia to cover the time of intervention and after surgery. The brain itself is not pain sensitive - this means you need to look for pain management whilst intervention and surgery only.

I am a member of the IACUC at the BUSM. As with all animal research the method I recommended had to be approved by the BUSM IACUC before the work could be done so I can say with absolute certainty that it was deemed to be an ethical protocol.

The compressed gas-driven shock tube they use is custom made but they do provide valuable insight into how in the article and the associated supplemental materials I cited.
