Syriac is a dialect of Aramaic, spoken in the area around Edessa. So Syriac is a subset of Aramaic, with all Syriac being Aramaic, but not all Aramaic being Syriac. Hope that helps.

The original Arameans were cousins with the Hebrews, with the children of Abraham. Abraham’s brother Nachor and his wife Milkah had eight sons [1]. All of them lived in the village of Na’chor[2] which was located within a larger area called Cha’ran,[3] named after another of Abraham’s brothers.[4] Altogether, the entire territory founded by and ruled by and named after these two brothers of Abraham – Cha’ran and Na’chor – was known then as "Aram."[5]

It is quite clear from all this that Abraham’s family-language would have then been predominantly Aramaic, which implies that Aramaic was a spoken language amongst the original Hebrews since the family of their ancestral parents were basically Arameans. This explains why Aramaic lasted for thousands of years as the spoken language of the Jewish people, whereas Hebrew, or “Sacred Tongue,” as we call it, was the language we used only for our sacred scriptures and for prayer, and therefore reserved for the ancient mystery schools, of which Abraham eventually became an initiate. To this day, in fact, there are sects of Jews in Israel who refuse speak Hebrew in conversation, reserving it exclusively for prayer and scriptural writ. And as for Aramaic, it remains alive only in the study of oral traditions such as the Talmud and Mystical wisdom texts such as the Zohar, which are studied to this day in their original Aramaic or a hybrid of Aramaic and Hebrew.

So indeed, you will discover far more commonalities between Hebrew and Aramaic than differences since the two evolved out of the same roots.
