Is the white layer formed on hardened AISI52100 steel nanostructured?

Hard turning,grinding usually introduce a white layer on the surface of hardened 52100 steel. I'm very curious about the microstructure of the white layer.

The structure of these White layers and areas is ferrite with small grain size depending on the thermal or thermo-mechanical treatment of the surface.
