Pyrophosphate cleavage of ATP and further degradation of PPi accompany the formation of fatty acyl-CoA in the cytosol during beta-oxidation of fatty acids. When transported into the mitochodria as acyl-carnitine, a -CoA molecule from the mitochondria pool is added to the free acyl group. Is this reaction different from the reaction in the cytosol? Is this process affected by carnitine?
