The concept of formal system and/or its properties is present frequently in many practical and theoretical components of computer science methods, tools, theories, etc.
But it is frequent too, finding some non rigorous interpretations of formal. For example, in several definitions of ontology, formal is understood as something that "computer can understand".
Does the computer science specialist, BSc, need to know that concept? Are it and its properties useful for them?
There are certainly aspects of formal systems that undergraduate CS majors should be aware of and have some sense about. That includes understanding of symbolic logic and schemes for the grammars of text languages.
With regard to "formal ontology" I was and continue to be distressed by such a misappropriation of the philosophical notion of ontology and the important consideration of what exactly one is granting being to by claiming a taxonomy to be ontological without consideration of what that's about. It is not a neutral endeavor and CS majors need to understand that also.
For me some basic knowledge of formal systems is essential for undergraduate CS students, as this is a necessary part of the scientific education.
If not, you might still learn a lot about software construction, but you wouldn't know nor understand its bedrock.

Adnan Majeed That's a substantial report. It seems to be meta to the question about desirability of formal systems exposure in CS undergraduate curricula. It looks like there is appeal to CS2003 for curriculum suggestions.
