Recently, some young researchers use Researchgate Net as a general social media (like Facebook) . This affects the actual researchers significantly. Your valuable comments with statistics are highly appreciated.
As most of RG colleagues mentioned, ResearchGate is a platform for researchers and scientists of worldwide to have directly connection together, share their knowledge and publications, have a medium to make international discussions and technical questions and answers.
i don’t mind if it is consi a social media for educated, civil people. Young researchers are inspiring. I learn a lot from them. My only issue is a free-loader phenomenon where some, very few, may not play by the rules.
RG is a learning platform for scientific researchers; the social media component is part of that. I do not consider it as a facebook for scientific populism, which is a marginal phenomenon, but exists to a little extent.
Research gate is mainly a platform for scientists and researchers to interact with each others mainly through scholarly publications and other beneficial resources to enhance and improve quality of research outputs.
All activities related to research are worthwhile being shared with other scholars. A platform itself doesn't matter. People leading the platform are the key to make the platform beneficial for all of us.
Very intellectual question. Thanks for the question. The Researchergate at the moment seems to be as a social media for researchers. I think this very good that is you have you research and also research's life. So if you put some strict limitations then you will lose many of users. So take it easy please!
Interesting question worthy of discussion in the RG. I think the most attractive part of RG is the dissemination of scientific / technical know-how which is usually not good transmitted by publications. Some details which are missing from concise method sections of papers and even from full method articles are transferred from experts to young researchers here. I also see nice discussions on general ethical and scientific issues between experienced scientists. There is also a scientific networking angle where you and your peers are updated on each others research outputs (parallels to social networking).
The obvious problems are (1) people who try to answer questions out of their expert area by providing general solutions...sort of facebook style and (2) people who ask questions which are too naive and easily answered by a google search /school text-book. Any large platform like this will sample the general population and these issues are unavoidable. I think that Quora has helped RG by removing some of the type 2 problems!
The intent, I believe, was for RG platform to serve researchers. It has been migrating to discuss topics that are far from scientific research. I, too, am guilty of answering non-science/engineering type of questions contributing to the social media structure that RG has become.
The Research Gate portal has the functions of both a typical communication medium for researchers and scientists as well as some functions of the social media portal but profiled to the world of science and research. Therefore, the Research Gate portal is a specialized portal for the exchange of experiences between scientists in the field of conducted research and, at the same time, an online information medium with some features typical of the social media portal. Thanks to the fact that it has so many functions in this area, it is currently the globally leading communication medium that enables the exchange of scientific and scientific-didactic experiences, the results of scientific research from conducted research, dissemination of particularly important concepts of the world of science.

We have many social medias. But,I believe that the RG is the only active scintific/research platform. Therefore, as researchers our duty is to protect its utility value as a scintific/research network.
Yes, you are correct. Thank you for your valuable comment. Actually, my idea was all professionals in all fields instead of scientists/researchers. Actually I have to modify the question as
Is the Researchgate a social media (for general community) or a platform for scientists/researchers/Professionals in other disciplines ?
Thank you for your idea. According to the replies coming from young generation, they would like to use RG as a social media. It can be accepted in some extent. If its social context overtakes the scientific/professional context, it is affect the objective of the RG.
