Unfortunately, in our country, these social media in general and WhatsApp and facebook in particular are being misused for political gains. Both of them are full of fake news and photoshopped pictures, the ultimate aim of which is spreading hatred among the majority and minority religious groups.
And yes, their influence is big, really big.
Every political party in India has their own paid people specially youths to make things viral. And the number is big. Their job is to make posts which would benefit the political party for which they are working no matter to what extent the contents are fabricated.

Yes! In my country, Nigeria, the people rely on the media for the authentic information about the society. And this helps them form General opinion, especially television and the social media.

The current state of mass media in the Philippines is quite different from the previous condition. Most of the newspapers and TV networks are circulating" fake news" which is aimed at discrediting the good work of our new Leader no other than our very own President Roa Duterte who is in the process of cleaning the house by strongly combating graft and corruption and narcotic manufacturing and distribution which were considered to be a malady in Philippine society for so many decades. Some media centers are deliberately releasing news which are unverified . We are very selective on what we hear, what we see and what we observe . Truth to tell, our New President is a man of highest honor , dignity, valor, hardwork and with a VISION to make the Philippines as one of the most peaceful and developed country in the Asia Pacific Region. Supposedly , mass media has a strong impact in shaping the public opinion but in my country at the moment, people are even challenging and discerning whether the news being broadcasted or being written on paper is true or not.
Of course, but the width and percentage of influence are depended on several parameters and is negotiable.

GENERALLY MASS MEDIA HAS A DIRECT BEARING ON HOW PUBLIC OPINION IS FORMED BE IT REAL OR FAKE NEWS . BUT PEOPLE OF TODAY ARE VERY SMART TO DISCERN WHICH OF THE NEWS AND IDEAS BEING DISSEMINATED OR BEING BROUGHT OUT ON TV OR BEING PRINTED IN THE NEWSPAPER. IN THIS WAY OR MANNER, THE PEOPLE WILL BE ABLE TO COME UP WITH THE RIGHT OPINION ON CERTAIN SOCIO-ECONOMIC OR EVEN POLITICAL ISSUES.
In my opinion, Mass Media nowadays effectiveness can be understood only including the New Social Mass Media.
Communication field is aware of the salience of visual stimuli (as phisical attractiveness and charismatic leadership) and public consent.
Social Media don't follow the rule of "politically correct"; as for US election, the more you invest on those new kind of media information, the more your percentage of appreciation will rise.
People whom follow politics seems to be more active online than those whom not follow politics. Among them, people from right parties are way more active than left parties electors. As usual, political election are decided not from the "loyals" but from the huge mass of "not-decided", who usually follow the trend.
I don't think that Mass Media role is outdated, but surely the Social Mass Media's role is, nowaday, more related in the "shaping public preferences" topics.
Last but not least, nowadays agenda setting is based on Social Media topics (due to their speed, easy access, chance to give everyone a chance to express his own opinion and so go on).
The steady growth of Social media is making a huge impact on Africa's political space.

Or even better, what are the new and emerging ways by which public opinion is shaped?
It is evident to me, of course it would have to be proved by actual research, that the growing force in shaping public opinion is social networks and media.
I make the hypothesis that facebook's news-feed, youtube's suggestions or twitter's feeds will soon be a stronger opinion maker than conventional mass media.
