I think that yellowing of leaves may probably be due to the increase in carotenoids content and this yellowing is an indicator that leaf undergo senescence.

Of course, yellowing be due to loss of chlorophyll/ chlorosis but also increase in lycobene precuresor which increses the carotenoids biosynthesis.
