I am using the Hu-Washizu principle in my master thesis, to remedy locking phenomenas in solid-shell elements with EAS and ANS methods. Many articles who have done the same, refer to Hu-Washizu principle as a three field variational formulation. However, in this article (see link), it is proven that the Hu-Washizu principle is only two field (and is equvilant to the Hellinger Reissner principle). Can someone make this clearer to me, is it two field or three field?

The Hu-Washizu principle is based on three varied fields.
I recommend you to check this article "Saritas, A., & Soydas, O. (2012). Variational base and solution strategies for non-linear force-based beam finite elements. International Journal of Non-Linear Mechanics, 47(3), 54–64", where the authors clarify the difference between the different variational principles.

The Hu-Washizu Variational Theorem is a variational theorem which includes all the equations for the linear theory of elasticity (without inertial forces), so it is a three fields principle. Have a look at the Finite Element Method book by Zienkiewicz and Taylor to read a complete and clear description including the equivalence with other variational principles (which may lead to think that it is a two fields principle), or to:
