I am a PhD candidate trying to use DE-LBM for modeling the behavior of a porous media (sandy soil for instance) subjected to fluid flow. I just started to understand the fundamentals of LBM. Is the LBM formulation independent of the coefficient of permeability (k)?

I have seen a couple of studies in which LBM was coupled with DEM by immersed boundary method (or in some cases immersed MOVING boundary method). There are also other studies in which a much simpler scheme was chosen to study the influence of fluid flow on the particles of the porous media e.g. considering laminar flow formulated by Darcy's law and calculating drag forces for each particle of the porous media based on that. It is obvious that one of the disadvantages of this simple method is that it assumes a constant homogeneous permeability value for the whole porous media. I wanted to know if LBM makes the same mistake.
That aside, what would be the most significant advantage of a relatively complicated method like LBM over simpler methods?
I would also be grateful if you could explain the differences between immersed boundary method & immersed MOVING boundary method if any.

First of all, I would like to thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.
In my problem, as I mentioned before, I am going to model a porous media subjected to fluid flow (2D). The flow runs through the interparticle voids of porous media probably leading to erosion of the particles. Thus the possible motion of solid particles must be considered. Based on the explanations you provided, this leaves me with the only option of using coupled DE-LBM; and in this case, apparently no assumptions are made for the coefficient of permeability, right?

There's a link between the viscosity and the boundary conditions, which may be reduced when the MRT algorithm is used.

Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is adopted to simulate the fluid flow in interval of dense spheres. To simulating the same physical problem, the permeability is obtained with different lattice number. The permeability is irrelevant to the body force and the media length along flow direction. LBM is used to simulate the fluid flow in the dense porous media; the ability of LBM to resolve this problem is confirmed. LBM is suitable for the simulation of flow in porous media because of its inherent advantage. If the radius of the sphere should not be less than ten lattices, and the ratio of channel length to radius less than 20 than permeability is issue.
