As routine usage of ethidium bromide in lab for staining the nucleic acids from decades ago,why we are not getting the stained nucleic acids could not get modify by the dye. We have frequently told by our seniors as ehtidium bromide is a potential carcinogenic, how efficient it is as potential carcinogen or we directly using the mutated nucleic acids by EtBr for further applications? ,
Nowaday there is safer stain such as SYBER safe, but in their catalogue wrote that this is safer than EtBr but not completely safe.
Also it is interesting for me, too. I appreciate to sharing data about this by anyone know about this, whereas I think those safe stain had similar structure with EtBr.
Have you heard of Tinto Rang it's a food grade non toxic DNA binding dye, you can replace ETBr with Tinto Rang

All materials contaminated with ethidium bromide should be packaged similar to hazardous waste at Brandeis and disposed of through the Brandeis Hazardous Waste Program as a special waste. If you do not have a waste container, contact the hazardous waste hotline at ext. 6-2561 and leave a message, including your name, location and question.

Ethidium bromide can bind with DNA, it is highly toxic as a mutagen. It may potentially cause carcinogenic or teratogenic effects, although no scientific evidence showing either health effect has been found.
