Respiration is increased by several different reasons.
High biomass -> high respiration
Stress -> high respiration rate
High organic carbon -> high respiration
etc.
Anyway, high biomass, high organic matter (including organic pollutants) make highest respiration.
If only respiration data, it can be reflect high organic matter and its not direct evidence of pollution. If you hope to use this as an indicator, should make a relationship between two factors.
