Use of social media and the internet in general are presumed to aid learning. Therefore in recent times teachers/lecturers have been encouraging each other to facilitate the learning and teaching process through increased use of such. From observations, I am beginning to wonder if these do not constitute major distractions to focused study and academic work in terms of proportional use of time. I suspect social media and the internet are addictive. What do others think?
Though they have their own positive contributions to teaching and learning, social media and the internet can become addictive. One area from which this addiction comes is real time notifications on almost all social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. A user is always notified of people's reaction to his/her posts on these platforms in the form of LIKES, COMMENTS and SHARES. In the process of trying to clear these notifications as they come, the user is constantly distracted. In the case of those who choose to ignore these notifications and look at them later, they are always in the danger of chain-clicking, that is moving from one point of the notification to another point on the social media. For example, MR A receives a notification that MISS B commented on his status on Facebook. MR A decides to reply the comment. (At this point he is still on the notification). And later, MR C replies MR A's reply to MISS B, but MR A doesn't know who MR C is. Because of the nature of what MR C says, MR A decides to check out MR C's profile. (This has become a movement from the notification). The chain-clicking has commenced already. And if care is not taken, the user might exhaust so much time moving from one area on the social media to another. This is also applicable to the internet as websites and blogs are built these days to keep visitors as long as possible through suggested reads that are most times irresistible. As someone who is into social media management, I know that this is good for the website/blog, but not always good for the visitor.
Age appeared to be inversely related to the addictive use of these technologies. Being male was significantly associated with addictive use of video games, whereas being female was significantly associated with addictive use of social media. Being single was positively related to both addictive social networking and video gaming

The research of every electronic instrument right from Internet to mobile which different devices for facilitating other users in it have made such instrument a luxury of pocket . Now day this have become so much common that it has reach to hawkers or the servant or sweeper of the community .
The question comes before us as for the social environment & also for global whether we all are on the right track .It has also been observed that for fake information by unknown person of negative tendency create also a mischievous problems.
Besides children from primary age level to school have become addicted to such type of devices .For this it is even parents or elderly remembrance can proudly overlook such instrument in the hand of such small children with this internet in the hands of office goal,businessman while traveling are also interested & anxious to work on the internet instead of observing the beauties of nature or social atmosphere .
Whether such instrument in the hands of users have to perform & also observe themselves whether they are on the right track for the inner development or to remain their mind only on their working environment & their problems

Yes, we are addicted by different social networks and internet. I do call it digital addiction. Researchgate is a social network which has so many addicted members.

Is social media addictive?
Social media can be addictive depending on how we use it. We can choose to be under its influence or we can make use of it to serve our end goal.
Regarding the Internet addiction, it is obvius that there would not be addiction to social networks without it.
