Is it ethical on researchgate to use somebody to drive traffic to one's project; by putting their name as collaborator without their consent or prior discussion?
It is good practice to first contact the person before you proposal his/he name as a collaborator. There are ethical issues involved in a research/ project and the proposed collaborator has to give consent.
Thanks for your response. I have had three such experiences and I was amazed how anyone could do that. I took me time till I figured out how to disentangle myself from their maze. Eventually I did. Thank you for your time.
I agree with David - to do otherwise is to invade the other person's privacy (like using them in an advertisement without permission). Both the law and ethics are clear on this point.
My name was recently included in two projects of other RG members without a prior consent or discussion. Thus I needed unnecessary work of deleting those projects from my page. Getting a prior consent is a must for putting somebody's name as a collaborator.
Their might be an issue on a site like RG where there is more than one researcher with the same name. It might be possible to mistakenly add the wrong researcher. But as a rule, one should not add a person to projects without their permission.
I agree with David Minja, because it shows the real relationship between researchers, coworkers, etc. I think about the question that the real problem is if you could put somebody's name if the persons do not gave you any permission to do that, and their colaboration whas so essential for your research or publication.
i agreed with Tayaram M.As' idea "Absolutely unethical", but sometimes such unethical acts could happen, the solution could be required the attachment of legal document, such as photos and academic achievements.
such documents also can be hacked systematically! i think that the best solution is telephone contact with each member of the project, in addition to all the attached document. this may help to manage Unethical situation.
