I think sketching is an important skill for engineers and all of the technical professions. So much of technical communication is conveyed from sketches, especially in a classroom environment, during meetings, or any in-person technical discussion. Increasingly people are less able to sketch their ideas clearly, and while CAD is far superior to hand drawings, we have also diminished our ability to draw freehand.

Yes, it does help absolutely. Sketching is helpful in illustrating the subject matter to the audience well through some insight into the topic under discussion. Students are more engaged through well drawn sketching. The objective of discussion grasped quickly through well drawn sketching.
It is necessary for an effective communication. Either the discussion is between professionals or academicians, to share the idea or concept, pictorial representation helps a lot. That is the motivation behind PPT and slide shows but it is not exploited well.
And it is present in Engineering education.
One of the issues is that students now expect handouts instead of having to copy diagrams from the board. Thus they lack practice and muscle memory. (There is a related problem in that they get tired writing in exams.)
Typically in engineering drawings have the components and their arrangement, both being critical - e.g. small errors in a circuit diagram can totally change its function.
One of the other features of sketching and engineering design is getting things wrong, and changing them - students expect to draw the final answer straight off.
Sketching is an important ability and teached e.g. in mechanical engineering studies. On the one hand they are used for describing constructive ideas and details, e.g. a shaft ands its bearings in a transmission. On the other hand to express workflows, sequences etc. in block diagrams or similar types of diagrams. New is the kind of sketches creation. During the past decades, sketches were drawn on paper. These years, sketches are increasingly created on pads and digitized online. In this way, hand-drawn information is able to be integrated into computer-aided drawings and even into simulation platforms or 3D-CAD models.

The Sketching is a very important tools that the engineer have in the real live. The ideas can´t be real if we dónt know to construct the the form, the characteristic, the color, the function. etc. So one sketch is the first step dos you need to solve a problem.
