If mild steel exopsed to a solution for 3 months. after the 3 months exposure siderite is present in corrosion products. I observe that in this case corrosion is more in comparision of control. I want to know that nature of siderite. is it protective in nature or not?
Siderite is more protective in nature compared to other corrosion products. If you observed more corrosion, it could be due to galvanic effect which occur as a result of partial coverage of the steel surface area. The uncovered area becomes the anodic region while the covered area forms the cathodic.
I would think it would heavily depend on the other constituents in solution and their concentrations. One thing that I think would be especially important to know is the pH of the solution. Without more information, I would be very hesitant to say that a carbonate passive layer would be protective.
