Recently, many of my friends who have enrolled in post graduate studies, whether masters or PhD, have claimed that research is quite restricted to specific standards and formalities and that it lacks art and creativity.
Although I understand the reasons behind their claims, they raise further questions regarding the nature of both research and art.
What is art?
Can research be creative? And in what ways?
Can knowledge be artistic?
Can the research output be a type of artwork, just like when we refer to a painting or a sculpture or whatever?
Research is Science.
We have information science, political science, medical science, physics science, social science, engineering science... but neglected greatly is RESEARCH SCIENCE. While all the sciences above and all others that I, you and others know, rely on research, for advancement of an academic field itself and of course the society.
Why it lacks creativity, because, we don't learn research systematically, in part.
At most we learn research methods at universities. Have you ever wondered, that we are teaching and also learning methods of the thing (research) that never have been taught?
Search for scholarly books and articles on topics of 1- research and then 2-research methods, or research methodology. how many will you find to tell you, me and other about the nature, theoretical and fundamental issues of the notion RESEARCH itself. I mean, its quiddity.
Search for universities that have departments or colleges just for research. find them all, please inform all of us.
The case of journals and those involved in them is the same. They have not learned research systematically, because there is not any department in any university, with specified courses for them. Therefore editors and reviewers act according to the standard that they have accepted for themselves. Some may be apparent to us. But most of them are not, they are in the mind of those officials of journals themselves.
Look at this claim please, as there are many reports about it.

But later some researcher from a part of world shares information via internet, that his/her manuscript has been published, in other journals, in other parts of world, with names of others as authors, Then scandal starts...
Certainly your questions are relevant, but should not we first go for this
What is research? ُ
seems very easy and simple, the answer to it, first,
but when we go through it, we understand how difficult even to understand it. That is why we have too many frauds and misconducts, plagiarism, data fabrication, authorship matters (3G+H authorship) just in case of publications, put away now products and services of science.
To be honest, for me this is the greatest mystery of the world of academia all over the world. Why we are asked and we ask for the products of something (research), that we have never learned! worse is that our earth, life, current and future tied to it.
I have extensively written about these issues in my own published works and also, more in details and up-to-date in my own initiated RG discussions and answers to others discussions in RG. If anyone interested.
All good research is creative. Freeman and Clough, for example, explicate poetic inquiry. Polkinghorne and Clandinin used narrative inquiry. Foucault provides the best answer: constantly evolving, never static. The problem for many is much of research is covert autoethnography--researcher fitting the data to the story instead of the other way round.
Research is an art for which we contemplate & find out our action for receiving the result of our research .Some years back I have expressed my views in this regards for which I submit herewith, R.G is playing the very Important part & as such i have merely to said ''R.G stands for P3 namely Progress-Prosperity,& Peace.

But I feel that our research for my PhD and then my follow-ups into 'Living with faecal incontinence' could be seen as an art form.
It was qualitative and I like to feel that it became 3 dimensional, when including the findings in the follow-ups.
Does that make sense?

These are great questions and ones that have been debated by scholars and practitioners in various fields for a long time.
Art can be defined in many ways, but generally speaking, it is a form of expression that is created with the intention of evoking an emotional or aesthetic response from the viewer or audience. Art can take many forms, including visual art (painting, sculpture, photography, etc.), performing arts (dance, music, theatre, etc.), literature, and more.
Research, on the other hand, is a systematic and methodical process of investigating a topic or question with the goal of producing new knowledge or understanding. While research may not seem as inherently creative as art, it does involve a certain level of creativity and innovation in terms of how one approaches a problem, designs experiments, and interprets results. In this sense, research can be seen as a type of creative problem-solving.
It is also possible for knowledge to be artistic in nature. For example, the way that knowledge is communicated or presented can be done in a creative or artistic way, such as through storytelling, visual art, or multimedia. Additionally, some types of research may lend themselves more to artistic presentation than others. For instance, a study of the emotional impact of music might be best presented through a musical performance or installation art.
Whether research output can be considered a type of artwork is a matter of interpretation and perspective. Some may argue that research is too utilitarian to be considered art, while others may argue that the process of research itself can be a creative endeavour. In any case, both research and art have important roles to play in expanding our understanding of the world and enriching our lives.
Research is an art, in the sense of a skill.1 However, the skill need not necessarily be exercised creatively or have anything to do with aesthetics. An art in this sense need not have anything to do with the production of art (i.e. artworks). Many medical clinics, for example, have the phrase "medical arts" in their name; likewise some medical journals.2 The practice of medicine is an art, but it is not art.

Yes, research is a art. Its a forum where any one can become an artist/ researcher with a new painting. A great benefit of research is that- One can have the ownership of it whether its a Idea or Painting. Point is it must be made public.
