this is an ethical question. We have a conflict with a co-author who stopped its contributions, he only participated at the beginning of the project. I did all data analysis, article writing and submission.
Now this co-author claims to be added as an author in the paper, I think this is not fair.
What do you think? Can he stop the publishing process or remove the article from the journal?
I think that when the article arrives at the production stage, you can not remove any author added in the article because from the beginning of the submission you made a decal that you have no conflict with the co-author .
First ask yourself/yourselves if the contribution from the now departed colleague in fact is necessary for the paper. If the author clearly was in on the discussions on how to write the paper, structure it, what results should be written about, and so on, and her/his contribution was crucial for the resulting article, then I would say - given your information - that you might have to reconsider. What I would do is to set up a meeting between all actual authors and the "departed" author, together with a mediator - someone who all of you consider fair and just, and who has no strong ties with any of you - perhaps a senior scientist from another department? Then you have a "judge" that can ask the right questions in order to make it better for all, and so that no-one will be hurt. Hopefully! :-)
You mentioned that he participated at the beginning of the project. I think if you actually used his ideas in developing the paper, he should be acknowledge.

One more detail, the article is not written yet. I think the acknowledgment solution is the best for the moment!
Acknowledging the person's discussion/expert opinion would be the right option.
