Nowadays, ORCID is crucial to that extent that many journals won't accept manuscript until you submit it with ORCID. It serves scientists identification in a uniform way so that any bibliometric analysis results would be indisputable. It takes a few minutes to acquire it, so there is no excuse.
ORCID is designed to facilitate the identification of the author in the academic context by means of a digital identifier. Currently there are more than six million authors and a thousand organizations that use it around the world. In some journals they request it to the authors as part of the identification requirements of the author. It is easy to access and use. It is not necessary to have it in the actuality to publish, but its use is increasing quickly and allows to identify with greater precision to the author.
It is very useful but not necessary! Some journals ask for it though.
