Abbas - there are a number of planning and scheduling softwares available and the dominant software tends to change because of cost, industry sector or geographical location. For example in the UK Construction Industry the dominant planning and scheduling software amongst the Major Construction Contractors has for some time (at least the last 10+) years been Asta Powerproject because of it's flexibility, depth of functionality and loyal user base. At UK subcontractor level and client/consultant level, practitioners make use of Microsoft Project because it is free/packaged with Windows machines and the basic functionality that is has meets many of their needs. In engineering projects and in the United States Primavera scheduling software has historically dominated. Recent focus is now on how these software developers have responded to/can respond to the opportunities that BIM/VDC provides in the planning and scheduling of construction work and newer providers such Autodesk Navisworks, Synchro, VICO and RIB and others are helping provide solutions often being able to work with the likes of Asta and MSP. In turn the likes of Asta have produced their own BIM solutions to maintain and satisfy their existing users. Planning and the use of 4D BIM is a key research topic of mine, so if yourself (or others viewing this Q&A) are interested, have a look at some of my papers in this area listed on my profile. Barry
