i need a very high damping alloy and came to an end that M2052 has the capacity to match it. i am not finding any supplier for that. can anybody tell whether this is commercially available? and if yes where? i need it. please help.
I am not aware of the availability of the alloy and I do not know the alloy either, but I made some Cu-Mn-Al model alloys during my PhD with simple atmospheric furnaces.
First I made a copper-based master alloy. I used a thick industrial grade/electrical graphite rod, drilled a hole lengthwise with drill bit and a turning machine, then charged the hole with weighted and chopped electrical copper (stripped wire), crushed electrolytic manganese flakes and chopped electrical grade aluminum rods (aluminum cable, watch out some aluminum cables have an steel core). Then filled the top of the charge with cryolite/AlF3 powder. Cryolite is the key. It removes the oxides and the ingredients instantly mix and solve in each other. I facilitated the mixing with a thin graphite rod. And then poured another layer of glass powder for extra protection (glass powder is the traditional flux for bronze casting).
This procedure is good for cupper rich alloys but seemingly for Mn rich alloys you will face with the problem of the reaction between Mn and carbon (formation of Mn3C). So you may change the crucible with an oxide based refractory e.g. Zirconia or Alumina. But then you will have limited time for the cryolite action since it dissolves all oxides. So you may use commercial fluxes available for steel casting. I highly recommend you to consider the activity of elements before any further action.
Should you have VIM or vacuum arc remelting furnace etc, just enjoy your facilities.
