This is fairly common, but it depends on the species of yeast and filamentous fungi involved, as well as the growth medium and incubation temperature.  A Rhizopus sp., for instance, would grow faster than most yeast in many conditions.  It will also depend on when you are examining them - filamentous fungi grow more slowly to start, but once they are growing will quickly take over a plate!

No, some filamentous fungi grow much faster than yeasts. It depends on individual species being compared.

If you want a reference on the different types of growth rates of different fungi, you might want to start with the Trinci paper I've attached.  I don't know of any papers directly comparing yeast and fungi on solid media (dry weights from liquid culture would generally be more meaningful), but I have never seen a single yeast colony completely cover a full size agar plate before reaching stationary phase, while fast growing fungi can achieve this after 2 to 4 days under optimal conditions.

By the way, editing your question after there are answers can be confusing as it is no longer clear what the answers refer to.

If You mean diametrical growth of a monocentric colony on agarized matrix I find difficult to sustain that yeasts grow faster: some strains of  Monilia sitophila, M.africana,M.dodgei or Zygomycetes hit even much more than 18 mm./h. (in my experience even 30mm./h) Yeasts are probably competitive as to biomass, but colonies are often policentric.

Franklin, Wang-Ngai Chow, You have a liquid or sold sample that is contaminated with both yeast and fungi (molds). If you inoculated a general media (YPD) with this sample, what you expect to see first, yeast or Fungi? when you incubate at 30C

Claudio Ciccarone, I mean growth in number. usually in food microbiology. Yeast and bacteria count after 1-2 days while mold count after 5-7 days of incubation with suitable media and temperature. can I take that as evidence that yeast grow faster than mold?

I will make it simple. I mean the growth in numbers only. The media is YPD with high glucose and xylose content (3% each) with some additives for yeast growth, pH at 5 and incubation temp 30 C. I already found this condition allow growth of yeast over the fungi from marine samples when done in a broth media for 3 cycles of 2 days each. I gust want to find an explain why the yeast grow faster? is it because the yeast generally grow faster or just the media and condition I destined was the reason. if the condition was the reason so what that? is the high amount of sugar or the pH that made the yeast grow over fungi?

For your information, I am developing a specific method for marine yeast isolation that is why there are yeast and mold together.

The number of yeast cells and mold is not known to me but both in the seawater sample.

I used the YPD broth as enrich media as  explained before for 2 days then used the culture to inoculate a fresh media for 2 days then inoculate a fresh media for another 2 days

but now I am writing a research article with full details on the isolation method, characterization  and identification of marine yeast.
