I am working on a thesis with my undergraduate students about surface disinfectants in our Faculty. Part of the results are that 35 % of the students use “Savlon” as a surface disinfectant in our clinics, which by the way is very popular in Ecuador. Nevertheless, there is almost no information about Savlon or related products, that is, containing clorhexidine and cetrimide, for surface disinfection purposes. Indeed there are no related articles in indexed journals about this intended use, and also non-clorhexidine containing product appears on the EPA lists (D and E), which contain the disinfectants approved by the CDC on surface disinfection purposes.
Is it the case that Savlon should not be used as a surface disinfection agent? – taking into consideration that clorhexidine does not work on organic matter, for instance. Would you be so kind and share your expertise on this issue. I would be very grateful.
