I can not give you specific answer as i not aware of your research work. However, i can give a conceptual answer that you can use to judge the work.

On of the main requirement now is the publications from your PhD research. As a standard it is well agreed that one has to publish at least two journal papers with impact factor not less than one for each paper. This requirement can be varied from a university to the other.

As for using tools, you can use them in your research. CAD tools are are enablers for analysis and design. In many cases closed form analytical solutions can not be reached and one has to use numerical solutions performed by CAD tools.

The important issues here are:

-The validation of the solution and its verification

-The originality of the solved problem

-and the usefulness of the results and their applicability in real life.

Some would argue that microwind is more of an educational tool. If possible, you should stick to tools from the traditional big 3 EDA vendors: Cadence, Synopsys, Mentor. As mentioned above, you need to publish your work and having a recognised 'brand' behind your results is the best way to go. In particular, work in reversible gates is usually perceived as 'too academic', you really want to make it look as real as possible to achieve any sort of meaningful publication.

better to stick on EDA vendors like Cadence, Mentor graphics and synopsis. Cadence uses virtuoso for schematic and specture for simulation, also synopsis is another standard EDA vendor can be used for research

for your research work you can use the cadence tool, it will give power and area analysis. you can try some trial version tools also.
