I would like to know if it is possible to consider each row of pistachio trees as one block and put each treatment in each block without randomization. Is it called a non-randomized observational study?
Dear Dr. Elaheh Daghighi. I would not personally recommend that. It can be done if all other variables and factors, other than the treatment are taken care of. It may include the age and height of the tree, etc. I am not pretty sure what kind of factor you want to control by blocking, is it soil fertility? Irrigation? Wind? Randomization helps to reduce error. Additionally, without randomization, there might be a chance of biasness. I would even suggest to add replicates of each treatment in each block. It is because, in field variables are so many and we cannot control all and we may not even KNOW all.
