In device simulation the metal electrodes are defined by an equipotential surface assuming that metal is ideal conductor with the most important parameter is the metal work function phi.

In fact the metal electrodes have a much higher conductivity the the other semiconducting layers of the device. In the analytical solutions of the electronic devices the metal electrodes are assumed consatnt potential surfaces with ideal conductor performance.
