In Model Simplification, small/irrelevant features are suppressed. In feature-based-design CAD systems, if you suppress a feature its dependent features are suppressed as well. Can we take care of the references (by deep copy) so that dependency is broken and a feature is suppressed individually. This may break the solid into lumps, but if thats ok, will dependency breaking possible. Theoretically? In any commercial packages? Any papers on this topic?
In commercial systems you cannot break the relationship but several systems provide alternative functionality to support model simplification. As example, solid edge provide a set of modification commands to recognize and suppress holes and rounds, as well as regions of even features in order to create and maintain a simplified version of the model. Not speaking about the use of the synchronous technology to modify a model. Other systems based on explicit/direct modeling will allow to import a 3D model and then apply modification commands.
From a theoretical point of view, breaking the features relationships it is not a big deal, unless you like to automatically reconstruct the relationships afterward.
