I treated municipal wastewater using two coagulants, one natural and another chemical (Alum). The initial copper traces in wastewater was about 41.9 µg/L. After coagulation and for most studied concentrations, copper concentration increased up to 67.0 µg/L. However, the coagulant has removed efficiently turbidity (from 118 NTU to less than 2 NTU. In addition, for the natural coagulant, copper content decreased in all cases up to 38.2 µg/L that's all.
My question again, how this can be explained?

In fact, it is known that the copper ion has a positive charge and that is why it is supposed to go towards negatively charged colloids to drop them down and precipitate, on the other hand, aluminium hydroxide pads have the ability to trap the copper ion through the adsorption mechanism of its various kinds, physical, electrical, and even possibly chemical. Therefore, the concentration of copper is supposed to decrease not the opposite

I believe that there's probably an issue with the determination of copper. Check the method being used. Make sure the digestion (mineralisation) of the samples is being done correctly as well as the instrumental analysis. I've had problems in the past with ICP-AES for quantification of copper. I recommend you use AAS or ICP-MS and nothing but HNO3 to digest the smaples.

. I just forgot to add an additional detail. I used AAS for copper determination, so there is no question of manipulation mistake. Yesterday, I conducted Zinc determination using the same equipment and I had confusing results again. In both cases, I placed filtrated raw wastewater in the first tube. Then, I placed it again in the last tube position to check any differences. The results were similar, so the instrument is working correctly. Frankly, I did not find any explanation until now. This may help to get a good answer. Thanks again.

If you use distilled water in your work, it is possible that all the components will become entangled due to the sensitivity of these patterns to the surrounding conditions. Please, can any one recommend the best way for samples preparation prior to make an AAS analysis for wastewater and treated water susceptible having several metals content to avoid any interference. Many thanks again.
