I'm working with a genome of a human gut phage deposited on NCBI and I'm very intrigued due to the lack of DNA polymerase and capsid proteins. Are there any reports on any similar phages?
Certainly there are some of the smaller bacteriophages that do not have their own polymerase but use the host. PhiX is one example. I can not think of any phages that don't have some sort of coat or capsid protein (some filamentous phages don't really have a traditional capsid). However please note that there are some "defective" phages that are missing essential genes but are functional because they tend to co-infect with a helper phage that includes those missing functions.
