Greetings!
Please help me with my question.
Is it okay to use ANOVA in determining differences in the means of the sub-scales of a particular scale? Is it even valid and logical in the first place, knowing that each subscale has a set of items different from the others?
For example, I am to use the Motivation Scale which has 4 subscales: Intrinsic, Extrinsic, External Regulation, and Amotivation. What research question will be answered by using ANOVA to compare the means of the 4 subscales?

When you have two variables, if you put them in a factorial, they will be just two variables of equal importance, if you put them into a split plot, they will be main and sub, you can find differences among means of mains, sub mains, and their interactions. Cheers.

-what is the aim of your study?
-what are type of dependent and independent variables (the scale of measurement)?
Have the assumptions of normality and homogeneity been fulfilled?
ANOVA analysis is appropriate for analysis of one or more continuous (normally distributed)dependent variable/s and one or more categorical independent variable/s.
ANOVA will answer, the existence of a statistically significant difference among group means of the 4 subscales: Intrinsic, Extrinsic, External Regulation, and Amotivation. Significant ANOVA followed by a post hoc test which determines significance of each pairs of groups.

In principle yes. If the same individuals responded to all subscales, you would use repeated measures ANOVA to compare the means. It only makes sense though if the subscale score are in the same metric, for example, if they represent averages across the same 5-point Likert scale.
