In my opinion it is better to be the master in one field rather than jack of all trades. If situation demands there can be collaboration between experts from different fields.
I know of a few persons who seem to dynamic in many fields but everyone knows they have very shallow knowledge. However, there might be exceptions.

It depends on your career stage. If you are just starting in a particular discipline, then you will be "forgiven" if you publish widely as this allows you develop research skills. As Subir Bandyopadhyay has stated, however, eventually you want to narrow your area of focus as you become more knowledgeable in your field and when you have decided what direction/path you want to pursue. You should then devote your time and efforts to mastering this selected area of specialization. This is what will give you competitive advantage. Although, there are exceptions depending on the discipline, this would be my recommendation in general.
