From Theory of Plasticity point of view, a material that undergoes plastic deformation must be modeled using the True Stress-strain curve. However, this is the general approach when the stress-strain curve is used is obtained from tensile testing (For example while modeling Aluminum using Bilinear Material models). So it is logical to convert engineering to true stress-strain to accurately model the material.

However, if modeling honeycombs/foams and using stress-strain data from the compressive testing, then is there a need for conversion to true stress-strain?
