I have synthesized nanotubes of g-C3N4, whose SEM was fine. In all the literature I came across during review, there was no mention of any surfactant being used, but a colleague of mine insists that surfactants are essential for the nucleation of nanoparticles. Can anyone please elaborate on this query?
Dear Abdul Wahab, surfactants are essentially used to as protective colloids and suspension stabilizers, i.e., they protect against particles collision and agglomeration during and after preparation, and maintaining them against setteling. The surfactant also influence size and shape of nanoparticles. Other roles are also possibile. Some investigation use processes without surfactants to avoid purification which is in some cases a hard task and may lead to the loss of appreciable amounts of the products. My Regards

Dear Abdul Wahab , The addition of surfactants will lead to its absorption on nano-particles surface and they will form self-assembled mono-layers thus the particle surface will be passivated and the surface energy of nano-particles will be reduced and the particle-particle interactions will be reduced. by another way allowing more particles to escape the aggregation process and generally lowering particle to nano size.
