We know that CPM uses activity oriented network (since nodes represent activities) and PERT uses event oriented network (since nodes represent events). So is it mandatory to use activity on node (AON) for CPM problems and activity on arrow (AOA) for PERT problems?
Hi, CPM is much better than PERT that uses virtual tasks that are not natural att all. CPM is easier to understand and to implement in any situations. However the two methods bring the same result. Best regards. Joel Colloc
Both representations have distinct merits (& limitations). However AON is common in PM software such as Microsoft Project and Oracle Primavera P6. Also 3-point estimates with AON representation is effectively integrated in software such as Primavera Risk Analysis - previously known as Pertmaster!
I usually don't like to separate them into 2, AON and AOA, as it does not give any help in using it to plan the project.
I prefer to use CPM/PERT, as a combination. It make each node has character of duration but present it as a node. (I hope you know what i mean, the circle with ES,EF, n, t, LS and LF)
its not necesary, you can to use indistinctly activity on node (AON) or activity on arrow (AOA) in CPM and PERT

It is not compulsory as it does not influence the analysis however, most computer application softwares utilise Activities on Node
