Information is very important issue for organizations. Managing information is also important. We can use some tools for managing organizational information including receptors, carriers, storages, processing element etc. In the history there were many different tools to perform these functions. Basically, after the invention of writing, people and organization used this significant tool for managing their information. Today with the developments in networks and computer science, portfolio of tools for managing organizational and personal information have been progressed. The industry developing these tools are called "information technolgies or sistems". But managing organizatinal information is beyond IT or IS. MIS is on the management side of the issue providing the interface between IT and organization.

Information Systems (and Technology) is a speciality on the point of intersection of the following two: Business Administration and Computer Science. Information Systems as a speciality is concerned with analysing and modeling business processes in all kinds of enterprises or organizations as well as with investigating, enhancing or even designing information systems to support that processes. 

Management Information Systems in the narrow sense of the word denote business information systems that support managers in their work by providing aggregated or analysed information to support managerial decisions. So Management Information Systems are some kind of (Business) Information Systems and hence they belongs to the objects of stydy of the speciality Information Systems and Technology. - I hope I got your question right.

In principle IS is a multidisciplinary subject and it lies at the boarders and interaction among various subjects; technology from one hand, but also business, managment, organizational theory, sicology, psychology, etc. IS is the description of IT in action within a certain context. Typically to the technological dimension we add, processes or operations (that are to be fully or partially computerized), data and information which are to be processed and analysed, and the people who operate the system. 

though IT can be used in many areas, like education, health, government, etc.the reason why MIS previals, is that in most cases, IS is used to make information available for managers to enhance their decision making mechanisms, this is why the most IS discipline is that of managment IS.

Like any discipline, this started philosophizing and it further extent to shape their own science. Still Technology Information Systems are affecting organizational forms and in the case of Management Accounting informatic system is central to its operation. It also remains to be clarified how would end the merger of XBRL, the GP (General Purpose Taxonomy) and the EBR (Enhanced Business Reporting). On the side of the Financial Accounting I do not think we will return to manual accounts. In short, it is not yet time for information systems applied to management, form apart camping. The basic difference stems from the intersection of two areas, and maybe similar to the intersections of Psychology & Business or Statistics & Business or Economics & Business.

As far as the degree or field of study is concerned, classification clearly follows the college from which the degree was awarded. I mean from a Business school or other colleges such as College of Science or College of Arts, as relevant examples. 

This question comes from the need to classify and put everything in its proper pigeonhole. But, not always is that feasible, reality is more complicated than black or white taxonomies. INformation Systems are a fact of life and may be studied from many different viewpoints. And that is good news. Usually, IS are looked up from only one perspective, and that is the cause of a lot of trouble. For example, organizational change is overlooked by the computer oriented staff and projects fail. Or, technology is overlooked by business managers, and they miss competitive differentiation opportunities.

I agree with prof. Vera thats its a cross section of two part business administration and computer science. Thats why some universities in canada,australia and europe put ist under the hood of business and some puts it back in the hood of computer science.

Ist is an applied IT and computer science that is mostly use as part of business in understanding their business flow and process as well as giving them tools to give a better and more precise decision making. That is why its most agree to area of business.

As a comparatively young field, IS research tends to draw from a variety of reference or foundational disciplines that are considered more mature such as computer sciendce, management science, and organization science. As in all disciplines, there are various interpretations what IS is; however, I hold the position that IS or in the case of your question, MIS is a computer-based system that provides its users with information on specified topics in a certain organizational context.  IT is the application of computers & telecommunications equipment to store, retrieve, transmit, & manipulate data in the context of business.

Definitely, yes! IS are more than technologies. They have many dimensions: IT, organization, management, psychology, sociology, and so on. Building a successful system and using it effectively require knowledge in all these areas.

Moreover, modern management is based on information systems and technologies. And business-IT alignment is a big challenge nowadays.Therefore, IST are a point of interest in BA.

So, IS are intersection of Computer Science and Business Administration, and they can be a specialization in both these areas.

Many universities have developed separate programs in (Business) Information Systems.
