If you were in Portugal, some people could ask if you made that question before or after the meal. It is well known that water is the best drink of the world and that can be drank practically without restrictions (hopefully) in any place and at any hour. In Portugal, the best meals are served with (the best) wines, but normally they are both tasted with moderation and only in special occasions. In Germany and in England there is mainly the tradition of beer mostly after the meals, I suppose. Nevertheless we should respect all different cultures and traditions, according to our level of education, do not you think so?
That's a good idea that I haven't really tried myself yet. In our extended family there are the following traditions: Lunch as main meal with a glass of water as drink or afterwards coffee or tea, or both mixed.
I think it is always good to drink a glass of good quality water on an empty stomach in the morning.
Afraa Ibrahim thanks, Afraa_Ibrahim, I'd love to agree with you. Certain traditions have developed in family life. I think, for example, of the presence of guests: Then a drink probably plays a role in every household, as greeting, refreshment and stimulation to talk.
Thank you very much for your contribution and for your experience. I think that a host, who wants to offer his guests a good meal, does not renounce drinks during the meal.
Dear Antonio, Our children have been away from home for a long time and have their own families. Often our meal is regarding to two persons. At noon, at the main meal, my wife and myself, we have no drink, but afterwards we have tea. But when one of our children is visiting and our grandchildren are sitting at the table, it is quite normal for them to have a glass next to them, which is filled with water to drink when needed.
Hein Retter .. well .. I enjoyed the discussion.. My opinion? Is it healthier to drink something while eating? NO.. drinking (preferably water) half an hour before & after meal is the trend in my family.. but for myself... well … a sip of a drink .. then.. eating a bit.. then again another sip .. & so on.. I know this is not healthy.. But I can't eat without a drink on the side.. :)
Thank you very much for your wise answer. Of course, wie can both, eating our meal with or withour drinking. It is interesting in which directions education and family traditions will go. Thank you very much, Rajaa.
