Is it ethical to ask an author for code of his paper? Do authors readily give such codes to stranger research students?

I'm going to enhance an already proposed work. I have developed my algorithm and model. Now I think if I should try to code the work by myself (which will too much time consuming) or I should request author of the work to provide me the code.
