I'm mainly thinking about the human mind / brain. Mental states are so called because they are understood as states (roughly "ways of being") of a physical system, i.e. the brain. Now, we can be in several mental states at the same time (we can belief several things at the same time, not to mention contradictory beliefs; we can want several things at the same time, albeit hierarchically). What I don't understand is how common it is for physical systems in nature to be in more than one state at the same time, and how this is possible.
