In most scientific areas each year thousands of students start in their discipline, many, but not all are unrealistic enough to dream of a carreer as a professor, even if their father is not a professor; on the other hand, it should be clear, that even in German speaking Switzerland, Austria and Germany with similar democracies and education systems, in each scientific discipline, for example, biophysics or medical disciplines, only a very limeted number of full professorships will be available within 10-20 years ahead. What should one tell students about their chances of ever becoming professor? No chance, if your father it not a professor in biophysics, neuropathology?
