High hardness materials typically have high H/E ratios (H-hardness and E-modulus). High H/E is usually beneficial for wear resistance due to higher elastic strain-to-fracture. Theoretically high H/E should mean good toughness but I have read few papers and have found in many cases that it is not so. In practice high H/E is associated with brittleness. Can anyone kindly shed light on this matter please?
