Hi all, I am developing a GIS web application which involves querying and creating map layers dynamically (like page getting refreshed for every 5 minutes) and also static querying etc. This application interacts with PostgreSQL for non-spatial data rendering. I am using NetBeans to develop the application. Is it mandatory to use Geoserver in the project? FYI, I am planning to use OL4JSF with Jsp to render the maps in browser where user interactions will be carried out. To understand my GIS web application, please refer my publication (screenshots) which is a GeoExplorer/PHP rendered through opengeosuite package also uses GeoServer. Please help.

Explanation: OL is for client-side, GeoServer for server-side. If you have large vector data sources (and for example integrating them in OL as GeoJSON is no longer practical) then you will also need a server-side solution to serve this data to the OL client. GeoServer is a good choice but there are also other servers such as QGIS Server.

You can Use Map Server, like Pmapper is a framework for creating web GIS application using map server. Geoserver is simply a middle ware where all layer(shp. File) are published in different formate like WMS, WFS etc. All layer(shp. File) hosted here
