FTIR technique can use to determine the effect of heavy metals with some compounds or materials. But to determine the concentration of metals in liquid samples, you can use AAS- Flame or GF, ICP-MS, ICP-OES and XRF. These methods can measure the concentrations in ppm, ppb and ppt levels.
Most of researchers prefer to use AAS and ICP techniques for determination of heavy metals in liquid samples after digestion. XRF usually use to determine elements in solid samples but also some liquid samples. Many preconcentration methods for the analysis of liquid samples by X-ray spectrometric techniques have been developed in the last decades therefore, we can not say the XRF not successful because there are some studies were done using XRF for liquid samples. All of these techniques have a number of advantages and disadvantages and giving the analyst the flexibility to choose which technology suits best.
